Forenzics are a Sydney-based quartet with a unique sound and attitude. While each performance is different, the sonic instincts and improvisation styles of each player transform the influences of post-rock, noise, jazz and electronic music into the bands’ distinctive, engaging, and ever-evolving aesthetic.
Sometimes wild and tumultuous, sometimes hypnotic and fragile, always transporting.
Free-improv with trumpet, bass, guitar, drums. Cinematic, hypnotic and unpredictable landscapes of sound.
Formed in 2005, Forenzics have a very simple philosophy: play what you feel without limits and boundaries, only that it must be created there and then. There are no restrictions on genre, texture, format or structure.
It is completely free music defined by the mood, ability and preferences of the musicians taking part.
Forenzics lineup is fairly fluid but usually includes Matthew Syres on guitar and effects, Dirk Kruithof on guitar, bass or vox, Joe Cummins on trumpet and kaoss, and John Whilton on drums. They have also played with some of Sydney's best drummers including Evan McGregor, Aemon Webb, Finn Ryan, Alex Slater, Louis Burdett, and founding member Ben Eadie, and various electronics wizards.
Forenzics have released three albums, 2009's H3O, 2010's Static and Silence and 2011's Build Ruins (released on New Weird Australia's New Editions label). They are currently working on their fourth as yet untitled release, recorded with the current live lineup. They also appear on several compilations including Droning Earth Vol.26 and Art Groupie 2008.
Live they are a force to be reckoned with, taking the audiences on a journey, sometimes wild and tumultuous, sometimes soothing, fragile and hypnotically beautiful.
Forenzics play an intimate two set show in Macleay Bookshop, 103 Macleay St, Potts Point, Wednesday 22nd May from 6 – 8pm. Featuring Dirk Kruithof and Matthew Syres on guitars, and Joe Cummins on trumpet, Forenzics’ free improvisations will draw on post-rock, free jazz and soundscape influences to produce a unique experience in sound. This show is likely to see the quieter, more introspective and abstracted side of Forenzics’ sound as suited to the intimate nature of the venue. Been a bit slow on the blog posts but just had to post about this great all-improvised gig coming up.
It’s a Sounds Unsound Presents gig so you know it’s going to be something special!
Featuring a brand new guitar duo comprising Matthew Syres (Forenzics, Strange, Jekyll Switch) and Pete Jones (Whore, Psychic Date, Axis) to open the night, followed by the incomparable Louis Burdett doing a solo set on drums and electronics, then finishing up with Forenzics featuring Joe Cummins on trumpet, Dirk Kruithof on bass, Matthew Syres on guitar and a Special Guest drummer.
Visuals will be supplied by RedCell Disorder – not to be missed.
Doors Open at 7pm, Saturday January 19th 2013. Tickets are $10 on the door. Town and Country Hotel, 2 Unwins Bridge Road, St Peters, NSW.
Forenzics are playing a free gig with Psychic Date, Galaxy Fuzz Band and Helpful Kitchen Gods, Sunday 18th March 2012, at The Gladstone Hotel, 115 Regent Street, Chippendale. We’re on first, a little after 5pm. Dirk (guitar), Matthew (guitar), Joe (trumpet), will be joined once again by Forenzics regular yet quite extraordinary Alex Slater (drums). We’ve also got the awesome RedCell Disorder doing visuals for us once again. Come along for some cheap beer and even cheaper live music. We’ll also be selling our latest CD Build Ruins released on the New Weird Australia’s New Editions label.
Realtime Arts have posted a review of Sound Series #15, as part of their look into Sydney’s experimental music scene. We played this gig back in July at Hardware Gallery, Enmore alongside Textile Audio, Secrets and Toydeath, who were in fine form. On the night we played with Alex Slater on drums for the second time and Joe Cummins on trumpet as usual. I feel that we may almost have a regular line up now at long last with these awesome players. Anyway here’s an excerpt from the review.
Forenzics have been around since 2005 but I hadn’t heard them play. With Matthew Syres on guitar and way too many effects pedals, Dirk Kruithof on lead guitar, Joe Cummins on trumpet and Kaos pad and Alex Slater on drums they play loose yet utterly cohesive improv inflected with jazz, rock, drone and psychedelia. Joe Cummin’s trumpet loops and soaring melodies are a particular highlight creating a smoky, sensual atmosphere and the rhythmic interplay, pushing against the metre with loping rubatos, gives the sound an intriguing elasticity. It occurred to me that music is best when it picks you up and takes you somewhere you didn’t know you wanted to go, and Forenzics did just that.
Gail Priest, Realtime Arts, Issue 104, Aug-Sept 2011
For the full review of the entire gig and also a look at The Now Now’s show from round about the same time, go to Realtime Arts website here. The images from the gig are taken by Lucien Alperstein, Sound Series’ official photographer.
Just a quick one, we’re playing this Friday night at Hardware Gallery, 263 Enmore Road, Enmore, with Textile Audio, Secrets, and the circuit bent madness of Toydeath. Our line up for this one will be Dirk Kruithof on toy guitar, Alex Slater on drums, Matthew Syres on guitar, and Joe Cummins on trumpet/kaoss. Awesome visuals once again provided by RedCell.
Doors open at 7.30pm.
Running Times:
8.15 – Textile Audio
9.00 – Secrets
9.40 – Forenzics
10.20 – Toydeath
It’s also the last chance to see Lucien Alperstein’s exhibition ‘Water and Music’ which features some stunning ocean photos alongside a photographic retrospective of the last 18 months of Sound Series.
Free beer, wine and soft drink!

Thanks again to Michelle Barry, William Bowden and Ryota Yamamura for helping us make such an awesome sounding record, and Stuart Buchanan for releasing it.
We are proud to announce the imminent release and launch of our third album, Build Ruins, recorded back in 2009 with Japanese artist Ryota Yamamoto on electronics and Joe Cummins on trumpet. The album was recorded and mixed by Michelle Barry, mastered by William Bowden, and is being released by New Weird Australia’s New Editions label. The album and poster artwork was created by Heath Killen, New Weird Australia’s resident designer and looks great. Without a doubt this is our best album to date, both sonically and visually, thanks so much to everyone who’s helped to make it so.
Anyway come help us celebrate at FBI Social, Level 2, Kings Cross Hotel, 248 William Street, Kings Cross, Thursday 16th June, 8pm. $10.
Supporting will be Domeyko/Gonzalez, Jusgo Mosh and Robot House with visuals supplied once again by RedCell. It’s also being simulcast on FBI Radio from 9pm, thanks FBI!

If you missed our intense gig with Louis Burdett a couple of weeks back, here it is in it’s entirety for your listening pleasure. Also available for free download if you just can’t live without it…
Sydney ambient, industrial, trip hop act Film Theory have kindly invited us to support them at the Sandringham Hotel, Sunday 8th May 2011. We’ll be playing as a two piece featuring Dirk Kruithof and Matthew Syres, both on guitars, for a more stripped back, moody and soundscape inspired set. RedCell will be joining us once again with his visually projected insanity. Also supporting on the night will be solo artist Phebe Starr.

Forenzics gig at new venue Tone.
I usually don't post full gigs but I just couldn't trim this one down, Forenzics played with so much veracity from beginning to end without taking a breath that it deserves to be seen. By far my favourite performance of theirs I've seen (the footage gets better 45 seconds in).
Thanks to the Bird's Robe Collective for putting on a great show with The A Band, Violence in Action, and Hinterlandt.
